DXY 1-minute glance habit: help or superstition?

Post by LondonScalper »

I glance at DXY on a one-minute chart before almost every EURUSD trade. Every quarter I ask myself whether that habit helps or is just superstition.

The test is simple: for a month, I write down whether the DXY glance changed my decision. Did it make me skip a trade, reduce size, or change the stop? Or did I look at it and do exactly what I was going to do anyway?

Last time I did this, the glance changed the decision on about one trade in ten. Of those, most were skips where DXY was diverging from EURUSD near a level, and the skipped trades would have lost more often than they won. So it seems to earn a small place.

The other nine out of ten, it changed nothing. That is the superstition part: a ritual that feels like analysis. It also costs a second or two, which matters on fast entries.

What I changed: I now only look at DXY when EURUSD is at a key level, not before every trade. It keeps the useful part and drops the fidgeting.

If a habit cannot pass a simple test like this, I drop it. Anyone else audit their own rituals?

Part of the reason the glance rarely changes anything: the euro is about 58% of the DXY basket, so on a one-minute chart DXY is mostly EURUSD upside down. The other legs are the yen at about 14%, sterling around 12%, the Canadian dollar about 9%, and the Swedish krona and Swiss franc making up the rest. When DXY diverges from EURUSD near a level, it's the non-euro part moving, and that is the useful information. So the same signal comes more directly from watching USDJPY or GBPUSD next to EURUSD. If the dollar is moving against everything, it's a dollar move; if only EURUSD is moving, it's a euro story. That's arguably a cleaner version of the one-in-ten case where the glance helped, and it costs the same second.

I ran a version of this audit on my own EURUSD entries and got almost the same split. Out of 212 logged trades, the dollar index check changed something on 19 of them, and 14 of those were skips.

Fairman's breakdown of the basket explains what I found next. When I swapped the index for a quick look at USDJPY beside EURUSD, the useful cases were still there and the screen was simpler.

The edge case is a sterling or yen specific move. If cable drops on UK news and DXY ticks higher, the index says dollar strength while the euro has barely moved, and I nearly skipped two good longs because of that.

My second ritual audit was the spread check before entry. Unlike the index glance, that one changed the decision on roughly one trade in six, mostly around rollover and the first minutes of London, so it stayed.

Have you tried timing how long the glance actually takes? Mine averaged closer to three seconds than one once I measured it on a screen recording.
