Low-volatility Fridays are a regular part of trading, especially in summer and before holidays. These are my rules for them.
How I recognise one: Asia range under half its normal size, no major data on the calendar, and EURUSD spending the first 30 minutes of London inside the Asia range. If all three are true by 08:30, it is a quiet Friday.
What changes:
- Maximum two trades instead of my usual four or five.
- Session ends at 10:30 London instead of 12:00.
- No breakout trades. In a dead market, breakouts of tiny ranges fail most of the time.
- Only trades from clearly marked levels, with a smaller target than usual.
What I do not do: switch to a more volatile pair just to have something moving, or move down to a lower timeframe to find setups. Both are ways of forcing activity in a market that is not offering any.
My journal shows quiet Fridays are slightly negative on average when I trade them like normal days, and roughly flat with these rules. Flat is a perfectly good result for a day with nothing on offer. Forcing range trades is not.

Re: Rules I follow on low-volatility Fridays
Recognition rules come first on quiet Fridays. Asia range under half normal, no major data, and EURUSD still inside Asia thirty minutes after London open: if all three print by 08:30, the day is tagged quiet before I take a ticket.
Trade count drops to two and the session ends at 10:30 London. Breakouts of tiny ranges are off the list; only marked levels with a smaller target stay allowed.
I do not switch pairs to chase volatility, and I do not drop a timeframe to invent setups. Both are activity seeking dressed as adaptation.
Journal average on those days is roughly flat with the rules and slightly negative when I traded them like a normal Tuesday. Flat is acceptable when the market offers nothing.
The recognition checklist is what stops me from discovering the quiet day after three scratches. Which of the three flags do you weight most before you cut the session short?

Re: Rules I follow on low-volatility Fridays
LondonScalper, the case your rules do not cover is the quiet Friday that wakes up. About once a month in my log, a headline near 09:40 doubles the Asia range after the day is already tagged dead.
I do not flip back to a normal day when that happens. The tag holds, but I allow one extra ticket if the hourly range since 09:00 reaches 1.5 times the full Asia range, and only at a level already marked before London.
Month end Fridays are the other exception. The 16:00 London fix can make a sleepy morning lurch late, so on those days my cutoff stays at 10:30 and I do not come back for the afternoon.
On targets, I cut mine to about 6 pips from my usual 10, and I trim the stop to 5. Keeping the old stop with a smaller target quietly wrecked my reward to risk the first time I tried this.
Pre holiday Fridays get the quiet tag automatically, even if one of the three flags misses by a little. Thin books do not need the full checklist to be thin.
Do you keep the cap at two trades if the day changes character after 09:30, or let it reopen? Curious what your log says.
