Mistake: Using Forex Habits on Gold and Indices

Traders who move from currency pairs to gold or stock indices often carry over habits that no longer fit. The mismatches cause outsized losses.

Pip values differ. A lot of EUR/USD moves ten dollars per pip, but a lot of gold may move 100 dollars per one-dollar change, and an index lot depends on the broker's contract. Using the same lot size as on forex magnifies risk.

Volatility differs. Gold's daily range in percentage terms is usually well above that of major currency pairs. Indices can gap at the open and have large moves around earnings and economic data, and some have restricted trading hours.

Costs and margin differ. Spreads are wider relative to the instrument, margin requirements vary, and overnight financing is calculated differently, often with a premium over interbank rates.

Stops behave differently. Indices and metals can jump through stop levels, especially at the open or during news.

Correlations differ. Gold relates to real yields and the dollar, and indices relate to risk sentiment, so they may not mirror what you know from forex.

Before trading a new instrument, read the specification, review its average daily range, and recalculate position size from scratch using the stop and the tick value. Start with the minimum size, and watch how the account responds.

Treat each market as a new subject.

Practical step: for gold and one index, calculate the lot size for a 1 percent risk using the average daily range as the stop.

Index opens are the specific trap. A stop that looks safe overnight can be jumped straight over when the cash market opens, and that's a very different fill from a forex stop. The US cash open at 9:30 New York is 2:30pm Lagos during US summer time, and the first few minutes often move more than the whole overnight session. The DAX cash open is 8am London, which is also 8am Lagos in summer. If you hold an index CFD into either open, size it as if the stop might slip by the size of a normal opening move. Or close before the open and re-enter once the first candle has settled.

Starting with minimum size on a new instrument is good advice. Watch how the account moves for a week before trusting your own lot calculation. On gold, check the contract size in the symbol specification first. At many brokers 1 lot is 100 ounces, so a 1 dollar move is 100 dollars per lot, and gold moving 20 or 30 dollars in a day is common. A trader used to 0.5 lots on EURUSD who opens 0.5 lots of gold is taking far more risk than they think. Work out the dollar risk from the stop in dollars, not pips, because brokers quote gold pips differently and that causes a lot of confusion.
