How to Dispute a Broker Decision: Building a Case That Gets Read

Occasionally, a broker's action seems wrong: a trade filled at a strange price, a withdrawal delayed, a rule applied unfairly. A calm, documented approach gives the best chance of resolution.

Collect evidence immediately. Take screenshots of your order, platform quotes, and account history. Save the trade ticket details, timestamps, and any messages. Note the time zone of the platform.

Compare with independent data. Prices from another broker or a data provider at the same time can show whether the fill was off-market. A chart overlay helps.

Read the terms. Identify the clauses the broker relies on, and those that support you. Firms often cite rules on abnormal market conditions or execution discretion.

Write a clear, factual complaint. State what happened, when, what you expected, and what you want. Avoid anger and accusations. Attach the evidence in an organized form.

Use the official channel first, usually a formal complaint to the broker's compliance or complaints department. Keep copies, and note deadlines.

If the response is unsatisfactory, escalate. Regulated brokers must handle complaints under set procedures and often belong to an ombudsman or dispute resolution service.

Keep the tone professional, and expect that resolution may take weeks.

Do not delete anything from your side, and do not make additional deposits during a dispute.

Practical step: prepare a template for documenting any questionable trade, with fields for time, price, platform, and evidence.

Screenshots with the platform clock visible make a big difference. A support team can argue with your memory, much less with a timestamped image next to another broker's chart at the same second. Note the server time as well as your own. Many MT4 and MT5 brokers run their server on GMT+2 or GMT+3, so a fill at 15:31 on the platform might be 1:31pm Lagos in summer. If you mix the two up in the complaint, they'll point out the mismatch and the rest of your case looks weaker. Also export the trade history as a report straight away, because the journal and logs on your platform don't stay there forever.

Staying calm in the written complaint really helps. An angry message gets a template reply. A short, factual one with evidence attached tends to reach someone who can actually check it. Something like this works: on this date at this server time I placed a buy stop at this price, it filled this many pips away, the other feed shows the price never reached that level, I'm asking for the trade to be adjusted to the correct fill. Then attach the screenshots in order. Ask for a ticket or reference number and a timeframe for the reply. That reference matters later if you need to escalate to an ombudsman or regulator.
