Precommitment: Designing Rules That Beat Your Future Self

Your calm self and your stressed self disagree. Precommitment is the practice of making decisions now that bind your future behavior, when you know you will be tempted.

The idea is old: Ulysses had himself tied to the mast so he could hear the sirens without steering toward them. In trading, equivalent devices exist.

Place stop-loss orders at entry, so that exiting does not require a decision in the moment. Use a hard daily loss limit, ideally enforced by something outside yourself, such as a platform setting or an account with a fixed maximum. Withdraw profits on a schedule, so they cannot be gambled away. Limit the account balance on the platform to an amount you can afford to risk, keeping the rest elsewhere.

Remove access during vulnerable times. Some traders log out of the platform after their session ends, or have a friend hold a password for emergency situations. Others delete trading apps from their phones.

Write a trading plan in advance, and treat departures as requiring justification afterward, in writing.

Use commitment with accountability. Tell a trading partner your rules, and report violations.

The key is to make the desired behavior the default, and the undesired behavior effortful.

Be realistic about your weak points, and design around them, instead of trusting willpower.

Practical step: choose one rule you break often, and design a mechanical barrier that makes breaking it harder.

Keeping only the risk capital on the platform is the strongest one on the list for me. If the money isn't there, the revenge trade can't get very big. It also makes deposits a deliberate decision. If topping up takes a day or two through a bank transfer, you can't do it in the heat of a bad session, and by the time the money would arrive, you've calmed down. I'd avoid instant deposit methods like saved cards for exactly that reason. It feels inconvenient, and that's the point. The friction protects you from the version of yourself that shows up after three losses in a row.

Writing the justification afterwards is a nice twist. If you have to explain a rule break in writing, you think twice before doing it. I'd keep the format short so it actually gets done: which rule, why I broke it, and what I'd do differently. After a month, read them all together. Most people find the same two or three excuses repeating, like it looked too good to miss or I wanted to make back the loss. Seeing your own excuses written down repeatedly is uncomfortable but very effective. Next time the excuse comes into your head, you recognise it, and that's often enough to stop.
