VWAP in Spot Forex: Useful Concept, Imperfect Tool

Volume-weighted average price, or VWAP, is the average price of an asset weighted by traded volume. It is a staple in stock and futures trading, where institutions benchmark executions against it. In spot forex, its use is limited by the data.

The calculation multiplies each price by its volume, sums the results, and divides by total volume. Because spot forex has no central volume record, platforms substitute tick volume, which counts price changes, not traded amounts. The resulting line is an approximation based on your broker's feed.

Even so, it offers a reference. Anchored to the start of a session or day, it shows the average price at which activity has occurred. Price above it suggests buyers have been dominant during that period, and price below suggests sellers have. It sometimes acts as support or resistance, and a return to it after a stretch away is a common mean-reversion trade.

The limitation is the quality of volume. Different brokers' tick volumes differ, so the VWAP line differs slightly across platforms.

For better data, traders sometimes use VWAP on currency futures, such as the euro contract, which has real volume, and then apply the levels to spot.

If you use it, treat it as one reference among others, and test whether it adds information to your approach.

Practical step: add a session VWAP to your intraday chart, and track how often price reacted at it over ten sessions.

Using futures VWAP and applying the level to spot is a neat workaround. Just remember futures trade at a small difference to spot because of interest, so adjust for that gap. The easiest way is to check the difference between the futures price and the spot price at the same moment, then subtract it from the futures VWAP. On euro futures that gap is usually a few dozen pips, and it slowly shrinks as the contract gets closer to expiry. Also note that futures volume concentrates in US hours, so the VWAP from futures may reflect New York activity more than London. It's still better volume data than spot tick counts.

Session anchored VWAP from the London open is the version I find most useful intraday. It's a decent read on whether the session so far has been buyers or sellers. Anchor it at 8am Lagos during BST, or 9am in winter, and see how the morning trades relative to it. If price spends most of the session above it and pullbacks hold at it, the buyers have control, and I'm more comfortable with longs. If price keeps crossing back and forth, it's a balanced session and I'd keep targets modest. I wouldn't treat the line as exact support. A few pips either side is normal given the tick volume.
