China and the Yuan Fixing: Reading a Managed Currency

China and the Yuan Fixing: Reading a Managed Currency

China's currency policy differs from that of most major economies. The central bank sets a daily reference rate for the onshore yuan, and the currency is allowed to trade within a band around it.

Each morning, the People's Bank of China announces the fixing. The market then trades within the allowed range, which has been about two percent on either side. How the fixing compares with the market's expectation provides a signal. A fixing weaker than expected suggests tolerance for depreciation, while a stronger one signals a desire to resist it. Analysts watch the gap between the fixing and market estimates closely.

Chinese data also drives sentiment: industrial production, retail sales, trade figures, and the purchasing managers' indices. Property sector developments and government stimulus announcements have mattered in recent years.

Policy tools beyond the fixing include changes to reserve requirements, guidance to state banks, and interest rate adjustments at the loan prime rate. The government has shown a willingness to lean against rapid moves.

Because of capital controls, the offshore rate, CNH, reflects market views more freely, and is the rate available at most retail brokers.

Chinese developments spill over to currencies tied to its demand, such as the Australian dollar, and to Asian currencies broadly.

Practical step: find the latest fixing and the market's expected fixing, and note the difference over several days.

Comparing the fixing with the market's estimate each morning is a simple habit. When the fix keeps coming in stronger than expected, that's the authorities pushing back against weakness. Several wire services and analysts publish the estimate just before the fix, so you can see the gap without any special tools. A gap of a few hundred pips stronger than expected, repeated over several days, is a clear message. That kind of signal can steady Asian risk mood and support AUD and NZD for a while. A fix that suddenly comes in weaker than expected after a period of strength is worth noticing too, as it can mean policy has changed.

For AUD and NZD traders this is worth a glance even if you never touch CNH. A sharp move in the yuan often spills straight into those pairs. When CNH weakens sharply, markets often read it as a sign of trouble in China's economy or rising trade tension, and AUD tends to fall with it. Before taking a long on AUDUSD in the London morning, I check whether USDCNH moved much overnight. If CNH weakened a lot, I want a stronger setup on AUD. If CNH is calm or stronger, one source of risk is lower. It takes less than a minute and gives useful context for the Asian session that happened while we slept.
