News process: beginner mistakes to avoid

Post by PropScalpDesk »

Beginner news mistakes I keep seeing:

Trading the first second of a Tier-1 release. Shortening blackouts after a green week. Fading spikes without a pre-marked level. Keeping correlated inventory into the print. Using demo news behaviour as proof live will match. Rewriting the calendar mid-morning because a YouTuber is excited.

Avoidance is mostly writing the window the night before and refusing edits. Add spread snap-back as a gate. Add a ticket cap after the window. Prop beginners: read the firm news rule twice, then take the stricter of that and your personal sheet. Mistakes cluster around ego and haste, not around missing a secret indicator. I keep a one-page "news mistakes" list in the mentee folder and tick when each appears. Patterns beat anecdotes.

If I had to pick one habit for a beginner, it would be writing the blackout times on paper the night before and not touching them in the morning. Most of the mistakes above come from editing the plan once the screen is moving. Second habit: count how many tickets you take in the first thirty minutes after a release, and compare that number to your journal at the end of the month.

One mistake I'd add is a stop sitting close to price through the print. On MT5 a short's stop triggers on the ask while the chart shows the bid, so a spread going from 0.2 to 3 pips can close the trade without the candle touching the level.

Beginners then look at the chart and decide the broker hunted them. Turning on the ask line in the chart settings usually ends that argument in seconds.

On demo versus live, the gap I saw was in the fills rather than the direction. My demo filled news entries at the quoted price almost every time, while live fills on the same entries were often a pip or two worse.

Your ticket count habit is the one I'd hand a beginner first, with a ceiling. Mine is two tickets in the 30 minutes after a release, and a third means I write down why before placing it.

In my journal the months with the most post release tickets were never the good months. They were usually the ones where I'd shortened a blackout after a green week, your second item.

For the mentee list, do you tick each mistake once per day or once per occurrence? I found per day hid the mornings where one mistake repeated four times.

PropScalpDesk, one beginner mistake that is very timely right now is the calendar clock. The UK changes its clocks on 25 October and the US not until 1 November, so for that week US data at 8:30 New York arrives at 12:30 London instead of 13:30.

A beginner with 13:30 written on a sticky note will be in a trade when the number hits. The same thing happens in spring, when the gap runs for two or three weeks.

My fix is to write blackout times from the calendar each night rather than from memory, and to check the calendar's time zone setting once a month. One mentee had his set to a city that does not change clocks, and every release was an hour off for half the year.

The second mistake I would add is reading only the headline against the forecast. A payrolls beat of 30k with the previous month revised down by 60k is a weak report, and beginners who buy the headline often get reversed within minutes.

Would timing errors go on your one page list as their own item? In my mentee notes they turned up more often than fading spikes.
