Beginner questions about daily loss limits

Post by PropScalpDesk »

Beginners ask if the daily loss limit should be a money number or an R number. I use both written: R for process, money for the fear check.

They ask if a winner resets the limit. No. The limit is for the calendar day, not for your mood after one scalp.

They ask if news spike losses "count". Yes. If you were in, it counts. That is why blackouts exist.

They ask how close to the limit they may trade. I use a soft stop around sixty percent so the hard limit is not a target.

They ask what to do after hitting it. Shut the platform. Journal tomorrow. Do not "study" live charts as a loophole.

Daily loss limits are boring on purpose. If your questions are about exceptions, you are already negotiating. I also tell beginners to write the limit on paper before they open the platform. If they cannot find the paper, they are not ready to click. Sounds childish. Prevents adult mistakes.

Last question they ask: should the limit ever change? Yes, but only on a Sunday, in writing, never mid-week.

One beginner question I'd add to the list: does the limit include the trade that's still open? My answer is yes, measured at its stop, and that one rule closes a gap most beginners don't see.

Say the limit is 3R and you're at minus 2.5R on closed trades. A new ticket with a full 1R stop could take you to minus 3.5R, so it isn't allowed, and the most you can open is a half size ticket.

Commission belongs in the number too. A day of ten small scratches can quietly cost 0.5R to 1R in fees, and beginners are often surprised to find themselves near the soft stop without a single real loser.

A winner doesn't reset the limit, agreed, but what about giving back a good morning? My give-back rule is that if I'm up 2R or more and fall back to half the day's peak, I'm done, even with the loss limit nowhere near.

Do you teach beginners anything like that, or keep it to one limit so there's less to remember? I can see the argument for keeping it simple at the start.

PropScalpDesk, I keep both limits for beginners after the first month, but only one for the first two weeks. Daily loss limit alone, written in R and money, soft stop at about 60%, and no give back rule until they have hit and obeyed the hard stop a few times.

The open trade rule stays from day one though. Limit minus closed P&L minus open stop risk has to stay non negative before a new ticket is allowed. That single sum closes the gap where someone is at minus 2.5R and still opens a full 1R stop.

Commission in the number prevents the scratch death spiral. Ten scratches at 0.05R each are a real 0.5R hole, and beginners need to see it on the same tally as losers.

When I do add the give back rule, it is a Sunday edit with a worked example on paper. Up 2R then back to 1R means done, even if the loss limit is still 1R away.

Do you write the soft stop as a money number as well, or only in R? Money is what stops the bargaining for me when the R figure starts to feel abstract.
