How to Choose Which Pairs to Trade

How to Choose Which Pairs to Trade

Many beginners trade whatever looks exciting today. A better approach is to choose pairs deliberately, based on your schedule, style, and experience.

Criteria to consider:

1. Liquidity and spreads. Major pairs usually have tighter spreads and smoother execution.

2. Session match. Choose pairs that are active during your trading hours. EURUSD and GBPUSD are active during London and New York. JPY pairs may be active during Asia.

3. Volatility. More volatile pairs can offer larger moves but require wider stops and smaller sizes.

4. Your understanding. Do you know what drives the pair?

5. Cost per trade. Compare spreads relative to your typical target.

6. Correlation. Avoid choosing several highly correlated pairs.

7. Your personality. If fast moves stress you, avoid very volatile pairs.

A practical plan:

- Start with one pair
- Trade it for at least three months
- Record statistics
- Add a second pair only when your results are stable
- Keep the total number small, such as two or three

Review your choices every quarter. Your data might show that one pair suits you much better than others.

More pairs can mean more opportunities, but it also means more noise and less depth.

Specialize first. Diversify later.

Something I've found useful when choosing pairs: check when each pair is actually active compared to when you're free. A pair that moves mostly in the Asian session is no use if you can only trade in the evening Lagos time. Match the pair to your hours first, then worry about the other criteria. An easy way to check is to look at an hourly chart over the last few weeks and see which hours produce the big candles. For EURUSD and GBPUSD it's mostly the London morning and the New York overlap. If your free time falls in the evening, you're looking at slower conditions on most majors, so wider targets and patience suit that better than scalping.

Watch out for picking pairs based on one great trade. You'll remember the 120 pip winner on GBPJPY and forget the volatility that comes with it. Choose on average behaviour, not on your best memory of the pair. Look at the 14 day ATR, the typical spread during your hours and how cleanly the pair respects levels over a few months of charts. GBPJPY might give 150 pip days, but it also needs wider stops and smaller lots, and it whipsaws a lot around Tokyo and London news. For many people a calmer pair like EURUSD produces steadier results simply because the trades are easier to manage.
