USD/MXN Profile: Carry, Politics, and the US Link
USD/MXN is among the most traded exotic pairs, driven by Mexico's close ties to the United States and relatively high interest rates.
The peso is influenced by Banxico's policy, which has often kept rates well above US levels, producing positive carry for those holding pesos. That attracts investors, particularly during stable, risk-on periods. When risk appetite falls, the peso often weakens sharply as carry trades are unwound.
Trade and politics matter. The US is Mexico's largest trading partner, so US economic data, trade policy, and immigration or tariff announcements can move the pair. Mexican elections and oil prices also have effects. Remittances from the United States are another important flow.
Liquidity is good for an exotic, and the pair trades in sizable volume, especially during North American hours. Spreads are wider than for the majors, and swap rates are significant, favoring peso longs, which means shorting USD/MXN positively earns carry while buying USD/MXN costs it.
The risk profile can be uneven: steady small gains from carry, interrupted by occasional sharp peso drops.
Position sizes should be smaller than on major pairs, with wider stops, since daily moves can be large.
Practical step: calculate the daily swap on a micro lot of USD/MXN in each direction on your platform, and compare with the typical daily range in dollars.

Re: USD/MXN Profile: Carry, Politics, and the US Link
Tariff headlines are the big risk with the peso. One post or announcement from Washington can move it more than a full day of Mexican data. That's hard to plan for, because the timing is random and it often comes outside normal hours. A few things help. Keep size smaller than on the majors, accept that a stop can slip on a gap, and avoid holding big positions over weekends when trade tensions are in the news. If you swing trade it for carry, decide in advance what kind of headline would make you close regardless of price. Deciding during the spike is how people end up holding a losing position for the swap.

Check the swap on your platform carefully. Short USDMXN can earn carry, but brokers mark it up differently, and some pay far less than the rate gap suggests. Some even charge on both sides. Open the symbol specifications and note the long and short swap, then work out what a week of holding actually earns at your lot size. Compare it to the pair's average daily range in pips. Often the weekly carry is worth a fraction of one normal day's move, which tells you the swap is a bonus rather than a reason to hold. It also helps to remember that carry trades in the peso can unwind fast when risk turns.
