GBP/USD Profile: Fast, Sharp, and Fond of Wicks
GBP/USD, nicknamed cable after the transatlantic telegraph cable that once carried its rate, is a major pair with a reputation for speed. It tends to move more than EUR/USD on the same news, and long wicks are common.
Its drivers include Bank of England policy, UK inflation and wage data, UK political developments, and the dollar's general direction. UK data releases often arrive at 7 a.m. London time, right as the European session gets going, which makes the early hours volatile.
Compared with EUR/USD, spreads are typically a little wider, and the average daily range is larger. That means stops usually need more room. A stop that is fine on EUR/USD may be hit by routine swings on cable.
The pair also has a history of sharp event-driven moves. The Brexit referendum in 2016 and the fiscal turmoil of September 2022 both produced large, fast declines. Such episodes are reminders that politics can matter as much as economics for the pound.
Many traders find the pair trends cleanly in some periods and whipsaws in others. Its tendency to push through levels and then reverse requires patience with entries and stops.
Practical step: compare the average true range of GBP/USD with EUR/USD over the last month, and calculate how much smaller your lot size must be for the same dollar risk.

The wicks are why I don't put stops right under the obvious low on cable. It loves to poke through by 8 to 10 pips and then carry on in the original direction, which is exactly where everyone's stops are sitting. What helps is to check the average size of the wicks on the timeframe you trade over the last few weeks and leave at least that much extra room. Then cut the position size so the money risk stays the same. It feels like giving up pips, but getting stopped by a routine sweep and watching the trade work without you costs far more over a month. EURUSD can get away with tighter stops. Cable usually can't.

7am London data is easy to forget if you start trading at the open. Check the calendar the night before, because UK CPI or jobs numbers at that time can make the first candle of the session a coin flip. For us in Lagos that release lands at 7am during UK summer time and 8am in winter, so it's often before your routine has even started. If a big UK number is due, I'd skip the first fifteen minutes after it and let the spread settle. The initial spike often reverses once London liquidity comes in properly, and a cleaner setup tends to form after that. You lose nothing by waiting.
