EUR/CHF Profile: The Pair That Taught the Market About Floors

EUR/CHF is a cross between two currencies of closely linked European economies. For years, it was among the quietest pairs, because the Swiss National Bank defended a minimum rate of 1.20.

That policy ended abruptly in January 2015, and the pair collapsed in minutes, as covered earlier in this series. Since then, it has traded freely, but the SNB still influences it through interest rate policy and occasional currency purchases.

Normal behavior involves small daily ranges, often among the smallest of the major crosses, with long periods of drift. This makes it attractive to range traders, but low volatility relative to the spread means costs can eat a large part of the potential profit.

Event risk remains. SNB announcements, eurozone political stress, or global risk-off episodes can trigger moves, and the franc's haven status adds a persistent tendency to strengthen when fear rises.

The pair also reflects the relative inflation and interest rate paths of Switzerland and the eurozone.

Spreads are wider than for EUR/USD, and liquidity can thin outside European hours.

The 2015 episode is a reminder that low volatility does not mean low risk. Quiet pairs with policy controls can hide large tail risks.

Practical step: calculate the spread of EUR/CHF as a share of its average daily range, and compare with EUR/USD.

Run the spread to range numbers and it's eye opening. On some days a couple of pips of spread is a big slice of the whole daily range, which makes scalping it a tough game. Say the pair moves 30 pips on a normal day and your broker charges 2 pips. A scalp aiming for 8 pips loses a quarter of its target to cost before price even moves. On EURUSD with a 0.5 pip spread and a range three times wider, the same idea is much easier. If you like EURCHF for its calm, it tends to work better with longer holds, wider targets and patience, where the spread becomes a small part of the trade.

Quiet for months, then violent for an afternoon. That's the pattern to size for, not the quiet part. The trap is that low volatility tempts people into big size with tight stops, because the chart looks so tame. Then an SNB surprise or a risk-off shock arrives and the pair moves several days' worth of range in an hour, sometimes with gaps that skip your stop. January 2015 is the extreme example, but smaller versions still happen. I'd keep size modest even when ATR is tiny, avoid holding through SNB announcements, and remember that the franc tends to strengthen quickly in fear. The calm is real, it's just not guaranteed.
