Is Forex Rigged? A Fair Look at an Old Complaint

New traders who lose often conclude the market is rigged. It is worth separating real issues from the story people tell to explain losses.

Real issues exist. Dealing desk brokers can have conflicts of interest, and regulators have fined firms for practices like trading against clients unfairly, delaying fills, or manipulating prices. Spread widening and slippage take money from traders, and some firms engage in abusive practices. Banks have been fined for manipulating benchmark rates and for collusion in chat rooms in past decades.

But the main reason most retail traders lose is simpler and less dramatic. Costs reduce returns, leverage magnifies mistakes, risk management is poor, and behavior under stress is hard. Many traders risk too much, hold losers, and cut winners, which guarantees losses without any manipulation.

The market is also not a casino with a rigged wheel. Price is determined by the large flows of participants, and no single entity controls the exchange rates of major currencies.

A practical stance avoids both naivety and paranoia. Choose a well-regulated broker, check execution quality, and keep records. If you suspect something specific, test it by comparing prices with another source, and report it to the regulator.

Then look honestly at your own results. Ask how much of your loss is explained by size, costs, and rule violations before blaming the market.

Practical step: for your last twenty losing trades, categorize the cause: market, costs, or your own rule breaking.

Categorizing the last twenty losses is a great exercise. When people actually do it, "market" is usually the smallest column. To keep it honest, define the categories before you start. A market loss is one where you followed every rule, sized correctly and price simply went the other way. A cost loss is one where spread or slippage turned a small win or scratch into a loss, which you can see by comparing the fill to the chart. Everything else is behaviour: late entry, moved stop, oversized, revenge trade. If you're not sure which column a trade belongs in, put it in behaviour. You'll learn more from being strict with yourself than from giving yourself the benefit of the doubt.

Both things can be true. Some brokers have behaved badly, and most losses still come from size and discipline. Picking a properly regulated broker deals with the first, the journal deals with the second. If you do suspect your broker, collect evidence rather than going on a feeling. Note the exact time of the fill, the price you got, and compare it to another feed or a second broker's chart at that moment. One odd fill during a news spike isn't proof of anything, since spreads widen everywhere then. A pattern of bad fills at quiet times is different and worth raising with the broker and then the regulator. Either way, records beat complaints in a forum.
