Stop Hunting: Conspiracy, Reality, and a Practical Response

Many traders believe that brokers or large players deliberately push price to trigger stops. The truth is more nuanced.

What is real: orders cluster around obvious levels such as round numbers, previous highs and lows, and the edges of ranges. Stops sit beyond those levels. When price pushes through, stops trigger, creating bursts of buying or selling that fuel a move, and then price often reverses. This looks like a hunt, and from your perspective, it is one.

What can be real: some dealing desk brokers see client orders, and have a conflict of interest. Documented cases exist of brokers abusing it, and regulators have fined firms for misconduct.

What is often exaggerated: the belief that every stop-out is deliberate. Much of the time, price simply moved through your level, because the market is volatile and levels are not sacred. Spread widening at certain times can also trigger stops without any intent.

A practical response does not require proving intent. Avoid placing stops exactly at obvious levels. Place them beyond a buffer, such as a fraction of ATR beyond the level. Size positions for the wider stop. Avoid thin hours. And choose a broker with transparent execution and strong regulation.

Keep your own data. If you suspect manipulation, compare your broker's prices with another feed at the time.

Practical step: for your last ten stop-outs, check whether a wider buffer would have kept you in the trade.

The comparison with another feed is the useful part. If your broker's chart shows a wick to your stop and two other brokers' charts don't, that's worth a screenshot and a support ticket. If all three show it, it was just the market.

Half ATR beyond the level has worked as a sensible starting buffer for me on the majors. You lose a bit of R on each trade but a lot fewer stop-outs by a pip or two.
