Time Stops, Exiting a Trade That Goes Nowhere

Many traders think only of price-based exits, a stop loss or a target. But sometimes a trade does nothing for hours, tying up capital and attention. A time stop adds another layer.

A time stop means you exit if the trade hasn't moved as expected within a certain period.

Why it can help:

- If your setup is valid, it should work reasonably soon. Delay can mean the idea is weak.
- It frees capital for better opportunities
- It prevents small losses from turning into bigger ones during unexpected news or session changes
- It reduces the emotional drain of watching a stagnant trade

How to use it:

1. Define your time window in advance. For example: "If price hasn't moved 1R in my favor within two hours of the London open, I exit."

2. Test it. Check your journal or backtest. How often do trades that stall eventually succeed?

3. Consider the session. A trade held across a session close may behave differently.

4. Combine with structure. If structure breaks, you exit regardless of time.

Cautions:

- Don't use time stops that cut off valid swing trades prematurely
- Adjust the window to your style: scalpers use minutes, swing traders use days

Time is a resource, like capital. Decide how long an idea gets to prove itself, and respect that deadline.

How I set the time stop in practice: I look at my winners in the journal and check how long they usually took to reach 1R. If most of mine get there within about an hour on the 5 minute chart, then a trade that's still flat after two hours is telling me something. Use your own numbers, not mine.

One caveat: don't use a time stop on setups that are meant to be slow, like a swing trade waiting for a weekly level. The time window has to match the setup. A 2 hour time stop makes sense on a London scalp, not on a 4H trend trade. Session timing matters too. A trade opened at 11am Lagos that goes nowhere might just be waiting for the US session and the 1:30pm data, so a time stop there might cut it right before the move. I set the window in candles of the trading timeframe, then check it against the session calendar before I apply it.
