Social Proof Traps: Why Screenshots Prove Nothing

Social media is filled with images of profitable trades, large account balances, and lavish lifestyles attributed to trading. They shape what beginners believe is normal.

Screenshots are easy to fake or select. A profit on a demo account looks the same as a live one unless the details are checked. A single winning trade can be shown while dozens of losers are hidden. Accounts can be funded with borrowed money or belong to someone else.

Survivorship bias adds to the problem. People who lose money rarely post about it, so the visible sample consists mostly of winners, and it suggests success is common. Studies of retail forex accounts from regulated brokers regularly show that a majority lose money, with figures often between 70 and 80 percent.

There is also an incentive to look at. Many accounts promoting trading success earn money from courses, signals, or broker referrals. Their income depends on attracting followers, not on their trading.

A healthier approach is to value process over proof. Seek out traders who discuss losses, risk, and drawdowns, publish verifiable long-term records, and do not promise easy money.

Be suspicious of pressure, urgency, and claims of guaranteed returns.

Use social media for learning ideas, not for judging what is achievable.

Practical step: unfollow any account that only posts winning trades or asks you to deposit with a specific broker.

Something I notice: the accounts that post the most screenshots rarely post a stop loss. If the risk isn't on the image, the image tells you nothing useful.

The 70 to 80 percent figure is on most regulated broker websites, often right in the risk warning at the bottom. Worth actually reading it once on your own broker's site.
