Position Sizing Across Pairs, Why JPY and Gold Need Extra Care

The pip value differs across pairs, which means the same lot size can carry very different risk depending on what you trade. Many traders miss this and take accidental oversized risk.

Basics:

- On most USD-quoted pairs (like EURUSD), one pip on a standard lot is about $10.
- On JPY pairs (like USDJPY), the pip is a different decimal place, and the value per pip depends on the exchange rate. It's roughly $6 to $9 per standard lot, depending on price.
- On gold (XAUUSD), contract specifications vary by broker, so pip and point definitions differ.

What to do:

1. Never assume. Check the contract specification in your platform for each instrument.

2. Use a position size calculator. Enter the pair, account currency, risk percentage, and stop distance.

3. Test with small sizes. Open a micro position on demo or minimal live size and check how much a move costs.

4. Know the instrument's volatility. A stop that's typical for EURUSD may be tiny for GBPJPY.

5. Record the dollar risk, not just pips, in your journal.

6. Be careful when your account currency differs from the quote currency. Conversion adds another layer.

Common mistake: copying a lot size from one pair to another because "it worked before."

Risk is about money at stake, not about lots. Convert everything into the same unit before you click.

Spend ten minutes today checking the specs of your main pairs.

The JPY range is right: a pip on one standard lot of USDJPY is 1,000 yen, which is about 6.70 dollars at 150 and about 10 dollars at 100. So with USDJPY around 150 it's closer to 7 dollars than 9, and that difference matters if someone copies their EURUSD sizing across.

Gold is the one where I've seen the biggest mistakes. On many brokers one lot is 100 ounces, so a one-dollar move in XAUUSD is 100 dollars per lot. Someone who thinks of a "10 point" stop as small can be risking ten times what they planned, depending on whether their platform calls 0.01 or 0.1 a point.

On data days the problem compounds, because gold can move 15 or 20 dollars in a few minutes after a US release. A position sized as if gold were EURUSD can lose several percent in one candle. Your ten-minute spec check should be done before the next CPI, not after.

Worked example on gold since it trips people up. On a lot of brokers, one standard lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, so a 10 dollar move in gold is 1,000 dollars per lot. A "small" 15 dollar stop on gold is nothing like a 15 pip stop on EURUSD. Always check the contract size on your own broker's spec sheet, they're not all the same.

Same issue with JPY pairs. Because the pip value depends on the USDJPY rate, it changes when the yen moves a lot. If USDJPY has moved several big figures since you built your sizing table, the lot sizes for yen crosses need updating. At USDJPY 140, a standard lot pip is about 7.14 dollars. At 160, it's about 6.25 dollars. That's a difference of around 14 percent in risk for the same lot and stop. For crosses like GBPJPY the same applies, since the pip is in yen. The easiest fix is a calculator that pulls the live rate rather than a fixed table.

Mistake I made myself once: copying a lot size from a EURUSD trade straight onto a gold trade because the stop looked similar on the chart. It wasn't remotely the same risk. Now I run every gold and yen trade through the calculator, no shortcuts. On many brokers a 1 dollar move in gold on one lot is worth 100 dollars, so a 10 dollar stop at 0.5 lots risks 500 dollars. On EURUSD, a 0.5 lot trade with a similar looking stop of 30 pips risks 150 dollars. Same chart distance by eye, more than three times the risk. Check the contract size in your platform.
