Fibonacci Extensions: Estimating Targets Beyond the Last High

Fibonacci Extensions: Estimating Targets Beyond the Last High

Retracements help find pullback entries. Extensions answer a different question: how far might the move go once price breaks beyond the previous swing?

An extension projects levels from a measured move, commonly at 127.2, 161.8, and 261.8 percent of the initial swing. To draw one, you mark a swing from start to end, plus the retracement low, and the tool projects levels beyond the end.

The logic behind them matches retracements: many traders watch these levels, so orders cluster there. Beyond that, the evidence for special mathematical power is thin.

Their practical benefit is a systematic way to set targets before entering. Instead of choosing a target by hope, you identify candidate levels, check whether they align with existing resistance, and calculate the risk-to-reward.

A good habit is to compare extension levels with structure. A 161.8 percent level that sits right under a higher-timeframe resistance is a sensible partial profit zone. One that floats in empty space is less meaningful.

Another habit is to take partial profit at the first extension and let the rest run with a trailing stop.

Keep a skeptical eye on accuracy. Price often falls short of or overshoots a level by several pips.

Practical step: apply extensions to five past trends and record which level price reached before reversing.

Worked example. Swing low 1.0800, swing high 1.0900, pullback to 1.0850. Measured from the swing low, the 127.2 percent extension lands around 1.0927 and 161.8 percent around 1.0962. I'd treat those as zones to watch for profit taking, not as exact targets. Be aware that different platforms and traders draw extensions differently. Some project from the pullback low instead of the original swing low, which gives higher levels. Pick one method, write it in your plan, and use it every time. I also like to check whether an extension sits near another reference such as yesterday's high or a weekly level. When they overlap, the zone is more likely to matter.

These levels get more useful when they line up with something else, like a previous high on a higher timeframe. A 161.8 extension sitting right at a weekly high is a target I'd respect. An extension in empty space, less so. I usually take partials at the 127.2 level and hold the rest for 161.8, adjusting if a major level sits nearby. The 261.8 level is reached much less often, mostly in strong trends after news. Track in your journal how often each extension is reached on your pair and timeframe, so the targets reflect reality.
