Scalping, The Honest Reality

Scalping, The Honest Reality

Scalping means taking very short trades, often lasting seconds to minutes, aiming for small gains many times a day. It looks exciting on videos, with constant action and quick wins. The reality is more demanding.

What scalping requires:

- Tight spreads and fast execution. Costs matter enormously when targets are small.
- High focus. Decisions come fast, and fatigue builds quickly.
- Strict discipline. A few oversized losses can erase dozens of small wins.
- Time. You need uninterrupted, active sessions.

Costs to remember: if your average target is 5 pips and the spread is 1 pip, one fifth of your potential profit goes to costs on every trade. Commission can add more.

Who it may suit:

- Traders who can sit through intense sessions
- Those with access to good execution
- People who thrive on quick decisions

Who may struggle:

- Traders prone to overtrading or revenge trades
- Those with unstable internet or distractions
- Anyone who feels anxious during rapid decisions

If you want to try it:

1. Trade only the most liquid hours and pairs.
2. Calculate your costs honestly in backtests.
3. Use a strict daily trade limit and loss limit.
4. Keep stops tight but logical.
5. Track your results by time of day.

Scalping isn't better or worse than other styles. It's simply a different set of trade-offs. Test it with small risk before building your plan around it.

A practical check if you're thinking about scalping: add up your round trip cost per trade in pips and compare it to your average target. If the cost is more than about a fifth of the target, the edge needs to be very strong just to break even. For example, a 1 pip spread plus commission worth 0.7 pips is 1.7 pips per trade. With a 5 pip target that's a third of the target gone before price moves. With a 10 pip target it's about a sixth, which is more workable. That's why serious scalpers care so much about raw spread accounts and only trading the busiest hours. The cost side decides more than the entry technique.

Something people don't expect: scalping is mentally tiring in a way that's hard to explain until you've done it. Plan for shorter sessions than you think. Two focused hours is often better than five tired ones. Most scalpers find the London open from 8am Lagos and the first hour around US data at 1:30pm are where the good setups cluster anyway. In between, spreads are fine but movement is slower, and that's when tired scalpers start forcing trades. Track your results by hour of the session. Many people find the last hour or two consistently loses money, and simply stopping earlier improves results.
