A Reading List for Traders, What Kinds of Books Actually Help

Books can shape your thinking in ways short videos can't. But the list is long, and not every title helps. Instead of one fixed list, think in categories.

1. Psychology and mindset.
Look for books about discipline, probabilistic thinking, and emotional control. Well-known examples include "Trading in the Zone" and "The Daily Trading Coach."

2. Market history and lessons from experienced traders.
Interview-style books, like "Market Wizards," show how different traders think and manage risk.

3. Risk and probability.
Titles that explain randomness, expectancy, and decision-making under uncertainty help you reason clearly.

4. Technical analysis foundations.
Classic references on chart patterns, price action, and market structure.

5. Macroeconomics basics.
Accessible guides to how interest rates, inflation, and central banks work.

6. Habits and productivity.
Books on building routines and sticking with them.

How to read them:

- Take notes in your own words
- Pick one idea from each book to test
- Avoid reading ten books without applying any
- Re-read key chapters after gaining experience

Warnings:

- Be careful with books that promise secret systems
- Check publication dates, since market structure changes
- Remember that a book is someone's experience, not a guarantee

Reading is valuable only when it leads to practice.

Choose a book, choose one lesson, and use it this month.

A tip on using books: read one, then pick a single idea from it and apply it for a month before reading the next. I used to read five trading books back to back and remember almost nothing. One idea, applied, beats ten skimmed. For example, after a psychology book you might take the idea of thinking in a series of twenty trades instead of one, and then actually review your results in blocks of twenty for a month. Write the idea at the top of your journal page so you see it every session. At the end of the month, note whether it changed anything. Then the next book has something to build on instead of replacing the last one.

A category I'd add: books by traders about their own failures. They're often more useful than strategy books, because the mistakes are universal even when the strategies are different. Market Wizards by Jack Schwager has plenty of these, with successful traders describing how they blew up early on. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is old but still accurate on how greed and overconfidence ruin good traders. While you're reading them, keep a note of each mistake that sounds familiar. That list ends up being more practical than any set of rules from a strategy book, because it's about your own patterns.
