Commodity Currencies, AUD, CAD and NZD

Some currencies are strongly linked to the prices of commodities, the natural resources their economies export. Understanding these links helps you read the market.

Australian dollar (AUD). Australia exports large amounts of iron ore, coal, and other resources, especially to China. AUD often reacts to commodity prices and Chinese economic data.

Canadian dollar (CAD). Canada is a major oil exporter, so CAD often moves with oil prices. Oil strength tends to support CAD, and oil weakness tends to weigh on it.

New Zealand dollar (NZD). New Zealand's economy depends on agricultural exports, such as dairy. Dairy prices and demand from Asia can influence NZD.

How to use these relationships:

1. Check relevant commodity prices when analyzing the currency.
2. Watch major data from key trading partners, like Chinese manufacturing figures.
3. Compare the currency's move with the commodity's move. Divergence can signal that something else is driving it.
4. Consider risk sentiment, since commodity currencies often rise in risk-on environments and fall in risk-off ones.

Cautions:

- Relationships aren't constant, and sometimes other factors dominate
- Central bank policy can overpower commodity trends
- Correlation isn't causation

A simple routine: add oil, copper, or gold to a secondary chart when trading these currencies and note whether they confirm your bias.

Context from commodities can make your analysis more complete.

I should add that these links are tendencies, not rules. AUD can ignore iron ore for weeks if risk sentiment is the bigger driver, for example when stocks are falling hard and everything with a yield gets sold. I use commodity prices as a background check rather than a signal. If I'm long AUDUSD and iron ore is dropping sharply, I want a better reason than usual to stay in, and I'll be quicker to take partials. Same with CAD and oil. A useful habit is to note in your journal whether the commodity agreed with your trade. After a few dozen trades you'll see whether that filter actually helps your results or just makes you feel more informed.

Practical example: NZD is tied to dairy prices, and the Global Dairy Trade auction results can move it a bit. Most people don't watch it, which is fine, but if NZD does something odd that isn't explained by the dollar or risk sentiment, that's one place to check. The auction runs every two weeks, usually on a Tuesday, and a big drop in the price index can weigh on NZD against AUD for a day or two. AUDNZD is actually a decent pair to watch for this, since it strips out a lot of the shared risk-on movement and leaves more of the difference between the two economies.
