Maximum Open Trades, How Many Is Too Many?

Maximum Open Trades, How Many Is Too Many?

Every additional open trade adds risk and mental load. Yet many traders lack a rule on how many positions they'll hold at once.

Consider what happens when you hold five trades simultaneously:

- Total risk may reach 5% if each is 1%
- Correlated pairs may amplify the exposure
- Attention is divided, and management gets sloppy
- A single news event can hit several positions at once

A rule for maximum open trades protects you from this.

How to set one:

1. Define total open risk. For example, never more than 2% to 3% of your account at one time.

2. Translate it into trades. At 1% per trade, that allows two or three positions, fewer if they're correlated.

3. Consider correlation. Count correlated trades as a single idea.

4. Match it to your attention. If you can't monitor three trades calmly, keep it at two.

5. Write it down. "Maximum two open trades. Total open risk under 2%."

6. Review. Check your journal for periods where you broke the rule and what happened.

Benefits:

- Clearer decision-making
- Lower stress
- More controlled drawdowns

Remember that quality beats quantity. One well-chosen trade often outperforms several scattered ones.

Limit your exposure before the market does it for you.

I didn't mention correlated pairs in the opener and I should have. Long EURUSD, long GBPUSD and short USDCHF looks like three trades but it's mostly one bet against the dollar. Count those as one position when you're checking your max.

This is where the count of trades matters less than the count of currencies. Two positions that look unrelated, say long EURJPY and short AUDUSD, can both react hard to one US release if the dollar and risk sentiment move together. Your follow-up about counting correlated trades as one idea covers the obvious cases, but the less obvious ones show up mostly at release times.

A simple rule I'd add: before any high-impact release, list the currencies it affects and make sure the combined open risk across all positions touching them stays within the limit for a single trade. If it doesn't, close or reduce something beforehand rather than managing three positions at once while spreads are wide.

For what it's worth, my own max is two open trades and 2% total risk. Not because that's a magic number, but because beyond two I start making management mistakes. Figure out where yours is by checking your journal for days you had several open. Compare the rule-following and average R on days with one trade open against days with three or more. Many people find their stop and target management gets sloppy with more positions. Also remember that two trades on correlated pairs, like EURUSD and GBPUSD long, count closer to one bigger trade than two separate ones.
