Market Structure Shift, Why Displacement Makes It Real

Traders often say "market structure shift" (MSS) and "change of character" interchangeably, but many treat MSS as a more demanding version: a structure break accompanied by strong displacement.

A basic MSS in a bearish-to-bullish case looks like this:

1. Price has been making lower lows.
2. It sweeps a low, taking liquidity.
3. Price then rallies strongly and breaks above a recent lower high with large candles.
4. The move leaves a fair value gap.

The strength of the move matters. A slow crawl above a level is weaker than an energetic break with real momentum.

How to use it:

1. Wait for the sweep first. A shift without liquidity context is less meaningful.
2. Confirm that the break comes with displacement, meaning large candles and imbalance.
3. Mark the order block or FVG created by the shift.
4. Wait for a retracement into that zone.
5. Enter with a stop beyond the origin of the move and target the next liquidity.

Common mistakes:

- Treating any small break as a shift
- Entering at the break instead of waiting for the retrace
- Ignoring the higher-timeframe context

If the break is weak and slow, call it what it is: a possible pause, not a reversal.

Demand quality from structure breaks. The more convincing the move, the more reliable the setup tends to be.

I treat a market structure shift as a break plus displacement, not a single close beyond a swing. Without the displacement candle I call it a weak break and wait; too many of those reverse inside the next hour in my London sample.

I sketched a synthetic EURUSD M5 chart of the difference below. A soft push through the last swing high fails back, then a later drive leaves a wide body and little overlap, which is the displacement I need before I plan a retest entry.

Displacement for me means the break candle's range is at least 1.5 times the median M5 range of the prior two hours. I write that median on the pad so I am not judging by eye after a fast open.

Change of character without that thrust stays a warning, not a signal. I will flatten a counter trend scratch, but I will not flip bias until the stronger version prints.

The retest entry only starts after the displacement candle closes. Entering mid bar through the level is how I used to buy the exact wick that failed.

I measure displacement as a range multiple against the prior two hours. Do you use that, or judge by how little the next two candles overlap the break bar?

Displacement is the key detail that separates a meaningful structure break from noise. Defining it objectively helps: for example, a candle whose body is at least 1.5-2x the average body size of the last 20 candles, and which leaves a fair value gap.

With that definition, a backtest can compare MSS with displacement vs without it. Without numbers, "strong move" is easy to interpret differently every time.

Fairman, I finally put reverse rates on the weak versus displacement split from my last note. Over eight weeks of London EURUSD M5, breaks without a 1.5x range candle reversed inside sixty minutes about 61 percent of the time.

Breaks that cleared the 1.5x median and left a small fair value gap reversed nearer 24 percent in the same window. That gap is what finally stopped me treating every close beyond a swing as actionable.

The chart above is an illustration of those two reverse rates side by side. It is why I now demand the gap after the thrust before any retest limit goes on the book.

Body size alone was not enough in that sample. A long body that fully overlapped the prior three candles still failed like a weak break, so I want both the range multiple and a visible imbalance.

I also skip displacement that prints inside the first three minutes after 08:00 when the book is still waking. Those candles look huge and often mean nothing by 08:20.

Would you count a tiny one pip gap as enough imbalance, or do you want a minimum width relative to the median range?
