Pre-Monday open checklist: news, levels, max risk

Post by LondonScalper »

Pre-Monday open checklist -- weekends create stories; the card kills them.

Monday London is where gap narratives and social-media weekend takes try to sit in my chair. I use a short written card so I start from process, not from someone else's thread.

Card
1. Sleep score and size throttle (poor sleep = half size or observe).
2. News in the first three hours -- blackout windows marked.
3. Friday levels still valid? Gaps that need re-marking?
4. Max loss and max trades for the morning only -- not the whole week.
5. One bias sentence or "no bias, levels only."

I fill the card before charts, tea in hand. If I skip it, I notice by 07:15 because I am already improvising. Improvisation on Monday is expensive.

What is the first thing you force yourself to write before Monday's open?

I also glance at weekend gap size on my majors and decide whether Monday is a warm-up size day. Large gaps with messy spreads get the same treatment as post-holiday opens: prove the tape, then earn full size. The card takes three minutes and prevents a twenty-minute improvisation spiral.

Hi LondonScalper,

The phrase "weekends create stories; the card kills them" is a masterclass in market survival. The retail world spends Saturday and Sunday building narratives out of geopolitics, YouTube takes, and panic. By the time the London open hits, that built-up retail anxiety becomes trapped liquidity just waiting to be swept by institutional order flow.

If you are trading raw price action—especially looking for those key sweeps on the M15 and D1 charts—improvising on a Monday morning is essentially volunteering to be someone else's liquidity.

To answer your question directly: The absolute first thing to write, even before item #1 on your card, is the Zero State Declaration.

It is usually a variation of this: "Friday’s PnL is zeroed. I have no positions, and the market owes me nothing."

Writing this forces a hard psychological boundary. A great Friday creates Monday overconfidence (leading to oversized, sloppy entries). A red Friday creates Monday revenge trading (leading to forced setups). Stating the "Zero State" severs the emotional carryover. It resets the mental equity curve to zero.

Here is an extended breakdown of why your checklist is so effective for a price action methodology, and how to push it even further:
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.

1. The Sleep Score & Size Throttle
You are treating risk as a privilege that must be earned, not a default right. Cognitive load is highest on Monday mornings because the market is establishing a new weekly structure. If your central nervous system is compromised by poor sleep, your reaction time to a sudden spread widening or a failed breakout will lag. Forcing half-size on a bad sleep day protects your capital from your own biology.

2. News Blackout Windows
This is purely defensive microstructure management. The first three hours of Monday London are notoriously messy as Asian session positioning is unwound. Marking the blackout windows (like central bank speeches or sudden macro data drops) prevents you from getting clipped by predatory spread widening. When the algorithmic bots pull their liquidity ahead of a news event, raw price action goes out the window. Marking the blackout protects the system.
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.

3. Validating Friday's Levels & Weekend Gaps
This is where the raw charting takes over. A weekend gap is simply displaced order flow. When evaluating those gaps on the M15 or D1, the critical question is: Is this gap a true structural shift, or just an exhaustion move designed to trap early money?

The adjustment: Instead of just asking if Friday's levels are valid, write down where the trapped weekend money is sitting. If there is a massive gap, mark the exact level where a sweep would clear out the weak hands before the true directional move begins.

4. Ring-Fencing the Morning Risk
Micro-budgeting your max loss to just the morning session is a brilliant circuit breaker. Most traders have a daily max loss, which means they can blow their entire day's psychological capital before the New York crossover even happens. By fencing off the London open, you ensure that even if the tape is toxic, you survive to see the afternoon structure form.

5. The Bias Anchor

"No bias, levels only." This prevents you from trying to forecast. The moment you write down a bias like "I am looking for EUR/USD to go long today," your brain will subconsciously filter out any bearish price action. You stop reading the chart and start reading your own wishful thinking.

The "Prove It" Protocol

Your final point about treating large, messy gaps like post-holiday opens is the ultimate professional filter. Large gaps destroy the immediate risk-to-reward ratios. The spreads are thick, the order book is thin, and the tape is erratic. Forcing the market to "prove it" before deploying full size ensures you are trading established structure, not the chaotic aftermath of a weekend news cycle.

The three minutes it takes to fill out that card, tea in hand, is the cheapest insurance policy in the world. It dictates that you are playing your game, on your terms, before the first candlestick even prints.
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.
