MQL4 Version (For MetaTrader 4)

If you are still running legacy systems on MT4, use this MQL4 equivalent. Create a new Expert Advisor in MetaEditor 4 and attach it to any active chart.

The Final Verdict for MT4/MT5 Algorithmic Traders:

Run either of these scripts during the Asian session or immediately after the New York close. If your broker operates a Standard account model, you will likely see the "Total Friction" spike to $25.00 or even $40.00 per lot as they artificially widen the spread to protect their own book.

If your Expert Advisors rely on tight scalping logic or grid-based entries, you must transition to a pure ECN environment. IC Markets offers dedicated MT4 and MT5 Raw Spread accounts powered by the same Tier-1 liquidity and Equinix NY4 servers as their cTrader offering, keeping your structural costs pinned near that $7.00 baseline regardless of the platform you choose to code in.

8. TradingView (Pine Script v5): The ECN Backtest Calibrator

While MetaTrader and cTrader are execution platforms, TradingView is the undisputed king of algorithmic backtesting. However, millions of Pine Script developers fall into the exact same trap: they leave the strategy() commission settings at default (zero) and ignore spread slippage. This creates "Holy Grail" equity curves that immediately collapse when deployed on a Standard broker account.

Because TradingView charts do not natively stream live interbank bid/ask spreads to variables, the best way to prove the value of a Raw Spread account is to hardcode the precise mathematical reality of an ECN broker directly into the strategy properties.

Here is a Pine Script v5 template that configures your backtester to perfectly mimic an IC Markets Raw Spread environment, alongside an on-chart dashboard summarizing the cost.

How to use this code:

1.) Open the TradingView Pine Editor and paste this code.

2.) Add it to your chart and open the Strategy Tester tab.

3.) Observe how the explicitly defined $3.50 per side ($7.00 round-turn) commission and the tight 1-tick slippage interact with your trades.

4.) Try changing the settings to simulate a Standard account (0% commission, but 10 to 15 ticks of slippage) and watch your net profit plummet.

Code: Select all

//@version=5
// 1. COMMISSION SETUP:
// A $7.00 round-turn commission on a 100,000 standard lot equates to $3.50 per side.
// In percentage terms: $3.50 / $100,000 = 0.0035%.
// 2. SLIPPAGE SETUP:
// Simulating a tight Raw ECN spread (e.g., 0.1 pips). On a 5-decimal broker, this is 1 tick.
strategy("ECN Raw Spread Backtester & Monitor",
     overlay=true,
     commission_type=strategy.commission.percent,
     commission_value=0.0035,
     slippage=1)

    float pip_value = 10.00 // Value of 1 pip for 1 standard lot

    float spread_cost = assumed_spread_pips * pip_value
    float total_friction = spread_cost + commission_rt

The Backtesting Verdict: Standard accounts force algorithmic developers to artificially widen their profit targets just to clear the invisible spread markup. By hardcoding your Pine Script strategies to the exact commission_value=0.0035 and executing them on a Tier-1 liquidity provider like ic markets, your backtested equity curve will finally match your live execution results.
