The "Frankfurt Open" Scalp: Germany's Secret DAX & EUR/USD Strategy

Post by PTScalper »

If you are hunting for a reliable forex scalping strategy, you might be overlooking a highly effective technique heavily utilized by day traders in Germany. While most of the retail trading world waits for the broader London or New York sessions, German scalpers exploit a very specific, highly volatile window: the Frankfurt Open.
Often applied to the EUR/USD and Germany's premier stock index, the DAX 40 (GER40), this technique capitalizes on the aggressive liquidity surge that hits the European markets right at the opening bell.
The Strategy: The 9 AM Breakout
German traders love the DAX 40 for scalping because its price reacts swiftly to European market dynamics, creating frequent and massive momentum bursts. Because the Euro (EUR) is deeply tied to the German economy, this exact same volume surge translates beautifully to EUR/USD scalping.
Here is how the "Frankfurt Open" scalping technique works:
1. The Chart Setup: Switch your platform to a 1-minute or 5-minute chart. Many German scalpers prefer using Heikin Ashi candles instead of standard Japanese candlesticks to filter out the intense visual noise of the micro timeframes.
2. Define the Box: Between 08:00 CET and 08:59 CET (the pre-market hour), draw horizontal lines at the highest high and the lowest low. This is your pre-market consolidation box.
3. The Trigger: At exactly 09:00 CET, the Frankfurt exchange officially opens, and institutional volume floods the market. Wait for a 5-minute candle to forcefully close outside of your pre-market box.
4. Execution & Risk: Enter the trade in the direction of the breakout. The goal here is to secure small, consistent profits rather than holding for massive daily gains. Target a rapid 10 to 15 pips (or DAX points) and place your stop-loss just inside the midpoint of the breakout candle.
Why This Technique Works
This strategy is not based on lagging indicators; it relies on pure market mechanics. The DAX 40 is exceptionally volatile during its first hour of trading (09:00-10:00 CET) as the market aggressively establishes its daily direction. By trading the breakout of the quiet pre-market range, you are simply riding the coattails of early European banking volume.
A word of caution: Scalping the open requires extreme discipline and a high-speed broker. Ensure you are using an ECN account with razor-thin spreads, as this strategy relies on rapid, precise entries before the broader market algorithms digest the opening moves.
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.

Frankfurt / cash equity open is a real liquidity wake-up. Whether it’s a “secret” is another matter — plenty of us have marked 08:00–09:00 London local for years.

What I respect about the window: European cash coming in, EURUSD often leaves the Asian torpor, DAX can lead risk tone. What I don’t respect is treating the first breakout candle as destiny. Opening drive, stop run, then reverse is common enough that I want acceptance or a failed auction — not a market order on the first tick through yesterday’s high.

Practical framing:
  • Use the open for information first, entries second
  • If trading EURUSD off DAX impulse, define which one is the leader that day
  • Size smaller until the first 15–20 minutes clarify
Do you flat before London’s fuller 8–9 GT / book builds, or is Frankfurt your main session?

Frankfurt open from someone who actually sits here

I am based in Frankfurt and trade the European cash open as a job, so this topic is home turf. The useful idea is real: liquidity and EUR activity pick up into the German morning. The useless idea is that there is a secret national strategy you can download.

What I actually run:
  • Pre-mark levels the night before; do not invent them five minutes before cash open.
  • Spread filter hard — early prints can look tradeable and still be too expensive for a scalp target.
  • First trades are allowed only after open chaos settles enough for my cost cap to clear.
  • DAX context can colour EUR risk mood; it is not an automatic EURUSD buy or sell signal.
Full-time tip: the edge is preparation and filters, not timezone romance. Sitting in Germany does not replace a written invalidation.

How do you define “open is tradeable” — clock time alone, or the first stretch where spread stays at or under your cap?

Hello PTscalper,

The "Frankfurt Open" is a highly structural, time-based strategy that translates perfectly into algorithmic logic. Because the rules rely on exact timestamps and price levels rather than lagging mathematical indicators, Pine Script can isolate the pre-market box and automate the breakout execution with precision.

Below is the complete TradingView Pine Script (v5) built strictly around the mechanics of your 9 AM CET breakout strategy.

Code: Select all

//@version=5
strategy("Frankfurt Open 9 AM Breakout", overlay=true, initial_capital=1000, default_qty_type=strategy.percent_of_equity, default_qty_value=2)

// --- Inputs ---
takeProfitTarget = input.float(15.0, title="Take Profit (Pips/Points)", step=1.0)
tradeWindow = input.session("0900-1000", title="Active Breakout Window", tooltip="Limits late entries after the initial momentum fades")

// --- Timezones & Sessions ---
// "Europe/Berlin" automatically accounts for CET/CEST daylight saving shifts
isPreMarket = time(timeframe.period, "0800-0859", "Europe/Berlin")
isTradeSession = time(timeframe.period, tradeWindow, "Europe/Berlin")

// --- Pre-Market Box Calculation ---
var float boxHigh = na
var float boxLow = na

// Reset the box at the start of the 08:00 hour
if isPreMarket and not isPreMarket[1]
    boxHigh := high
    boxLow := low
else if isPreMarket
    // Dynamically expand the box as new highs/lows are printed
    boxHigh := math.max(boxHigh, high)
    boxLow := math.min(boxLow, low)

// Visually project the box levels onto the chart during the trading session
plot(not isPreMarket and boxHigh > 0 ? boxHigh : na, color=color.green, style=plot.style_linebr, linewidth=2, title="Box High")
plot(not isPreMarket and boxLow > 0 ? boxLow : na, color=color.red, style=plot.style_linebr, linewidth=2, title="Box Low")

// --- Multiplier Calibration ---
// Automatically adjust point calculation whether trading EUR/USD (Forex) or DAX 40 (Index)
pipMultiplier = syminfo.type == "forex" ? (syminfo.mintick * 10) : syminfo.mintick
tpDistance = takeProfitTarget * pipMultiplier

// --- Trading Logic & Execution ---
var float stopLossLevel = na
var float takeProfitLevel = na

// The Trigger: Price must forcefully CLOSE outside the box, not just wick past it
longBreakout = isTradeSession and close > boxHigh and strategy.position_size == 0
shortBreakout = isTradeSession and close < boxLow and strategy.position_size == 0

if longBreakout
    // Risk Management: Stop loss at the midpoint of the breakout candle
    stopLossLevel := (high + low) / 2
    takeProfitLevel := close + tpDistance
    strategy.entry("Frankfurt Long", strategy.long)
    strategy.exit("Exit Long", "Frankfurt Long", stop=stopLossLevel, limit=takeProfitLevel)

if shortBreakout
    // Risk Management: Stop loss at the midpoint of the breakout candle
    stopLossLevel := (high + low) / 2
    takeProfitLevel := close - tpDistance
    strategy.entry("Frankfurt Short", strategy.short)
    strategy.exit("Exit Short", "Frankfurt Short", stop=stopLossLevel, limit=takeProfitLevel)

Chart Setup and Application

Timeframe & Chart Type: Apply this script specifically to the 5-minute chart. If you prefer Heikin Ashi candles to reduce visual noise, switch your main TradingView chart to Heikin Ashi; the script calculates the highs and lows based on whatever candle type is actively displayed on your screen.

Timezone Independence: The script uses "Europe/Berlin" internally. It does not matter what timezone your personal computer or TradingView account is set to—it will always track the true 08:00 to 09:00 CET/CEST liquidity window.

Asset Flexibility: The script contains a pipMultiplier variable that automatically detects whether you are viewing a forex pair (EUR/USD) or an index (DAX). If trading EUR/USD, the default "15.0" target equates to 15 standard pips. If trading the DAX, it equates to 15 index points.

Momentum Window: The script limits new trade entries to the 0900-1000 window. If the market ranges and fails to break out by 10:00 CET, the script stands down, preventing you from getting caught in low-volume, mid-day chop.

Because this strategy targets rapid 10–15 pip bursts right at the open, executing it successfully in a live environment requires zero hesitation. You will want to monitor your broker's slippage during the 09:00 CET volume spike, as institutional algorithms can rapidly widen spreads in the first few seconds of the hour, potentially pulling your entry price away from the clean breakout level.

To elevate this from a retail concept to an institutional-grade algorithmic model, the strategy requires dynamic risk-adjusted position sizing, volume filtering to avoid "fake-outs," and rigorous session management. Institutional scalpers do not trade fixed lot sizes; they calculate risk as a strict percentage of their equity based on the specific stop-loss distance of each trade.

This upgraded Pine Script (v5) introduces professional trade logic, including three distinct stop-loss models, volume moving average confirmation, and a "force flat" mechanism that automatically closes lingering trades before the mid-day market chop begins.

Code: Select all

//@version=5
strategy("Frankfurt Open Institutional Breakout [PRO]", overlay=true, margin_long=100, margin_short=100, calc_on_every_tick=true, initial_capital=10000)

var G_R = "Risk Management"

Institutional Upgrades Explained

This iteration transitions the script from a basic visual aid into a deployable algorithmic framework:

Dynamic Position Sizing (True Risk Control): Retail traders often use fixed lot sizes (e.g., always trading 1 lot), which breaks mathematical expectancy because some breakouts have 5-pip candles and others have 15-pip candles. This script measures the exact distance to your stop loss and recalculates your lot size on every single trade to ensure you only ever lose exactly X% of your equity.

Volume Filtration: The useVolFilter toggle requires the breakout candle to have higher volume than the 20-period moving average. Breakouts without volume are traps set by market makers to sweep liquidity. If a candle breaches the box on thin volume, the script ignores it.

Time-Based "Force Flat": Scalps are meant to capitalize on extreme short-term momentum. If a trade triggered at 09:15 has not hit its target or stop-loss by 11:00 CET, the premise of the trade is dead. The script automatically liquidates any open positions at 11:00 to prevent capital from getting locked in algorithmic midday ranging.
