How long before a journal actually improves behaviour?

For me: about six to eight weeks of consistent tags before patterns were undeniable, and another month before rules stuck without negotiation. The first fortnight was performance art -- neat notes, same mistakes.

What shortened the lag
Fewer fields, mandatory tags before the next session, and rules written as if-then ("two boredom tags -> Asia flat") rather than insights. Insights feel productive; if-then changes clicks.

If your journal is months old and behaviour is unchanged, it is probably too long, too vague, or never reviewed with a timer. Volume of prose is not progress.

How long did it take before your journal produced a rule you still follow?

A useful milestone: the first time you follow an if-then rule you dislike in the moment. That is the journal working. Until then, you have a diary. Be patient, but be ruthless with fields that never produce an if-then.

Journals improve behaviour after the boring weeks

Six to eight weeks before patterns become undeniable matches my experience. The first fortnight is neat handwriting and identical mistakes. Improvement starts when tags are mandatory and the review asks uncomfortable counts, not when the notebook looks professional.

What shortened the lag for me:
  • Fewer fields, filled before the next session
  • Forced tags: FOMO, early entry, held loser, cost ignore
  • Weekly count of tag frequency — if FOMO does not fall, the rule is still theatre
I also refuse to add a new strategy while the journal is still proving I cannot follow the old one. Frankfurt full-time without feedback loops is just expensive repetition.

One more accelerant: review the same three mistakes every Sunday. If a tag is still frequent after a month, I rewrite the pre-trade checklist rather than writing longer essays about discipline.

At what week did your tags first change an actual pre-trade behaviour — not just your post-trade narrative?
