Storage pricing has been rude lately — especially the big NVMe sticks when you’re buying “I need it this week.”

For a trading + EA/dev workstation I care about boring reliability more than peak Gen5 brochure speeds. Charting, tick archives, and symbol history are mostly sequential/mixed workloads; a well-cooled 990-class drive is usually plenty. The 9100 Pro numbers look lovely in a bench screenshot and matter less once Windows Search and Chrome have joined the session.

Practical split that worked for me:
  • OS + platforms on one NVMe
  • Historical data / VMs / builds on a second
  • Keep a third slot or SATA SSD for cold archives so the trading disk stays lean
£/$ shock aside: confirm cooling and DRAM/cache behaviour under sustained write (tick dumps). Thermal throttle mid-backtest is a real annoyance. Did you go 9100 or 990 in the end, and are you running it as the OS disk or a data volume?
