cTrader vs MT5 for sub-second scalps — notes from both sides

Post by LondonScalper »

I run both. Not because I'm indecisive — because brokers force the choice and execution character isn't identical.

**MT5 (what I still live in most days)**
- Ecosystem, VPS images, MQL5, Python package — muscle memory.
- Market depth availability depends heavily on broker feed.
- Partial fills / retcodes need explicit handling if you automate.
- Charting is fine; DOM UX varies from "usable" to "why."

**cTrader**
- Order UI and depth feel built for people who actually click for a living.
- Open API is pleasant if you like C#/Python integrations.
- Not every raw/ECN brand I want is on it.
- Some builds feel snappier for discretionary hotkey scalps; some don't — build + broker plugin matter.

**What actually decided fills for me:** broker liquidity + account type + VPS path > platform logo. Platform is the steering wheel; the engine is elsewhere. That said, for pure discretionary London open clicking, I prefer cTrader's order workflow. For algo + logging + my existing stack, MT5 wins.

If you're choosing only for **execution feel** on M1 scalps (not EA zoo), what are you on and why?
Anyone measured click-to-fill difference between cTrader and MT5 at the *same* broker?

Both-sides notes are more useful than fan threads.

My split:
MT5 — default desk, VPS muscle memory, logging/scripts, most of my journal pipeline
cTrader — when the broker’s execution / depth feel cleaner for that account; UI for fast ticket edits can feel better depending on the build

Sub-second fantasy usually dies on spread + reject + freeze level, not on which platform logo is in the corner. I pick the stack where my order + modify path is reliable for that broker.

If you had to keep only one for funded + home for the next year, which survives — and why?

Both platforms, different jobs

I have used both. Muscle memory keeps me in MT5 most days; cTrader earns a seat when depth of market and order handling for a specific broker are clearly better in live deals, not in screenshots.

Decision rule I use:
  • If I need ecosystem, VPS images, and automation familiarity → MT5.
  • If live order board and partial handling feel cleaner on that broker → cTrader.
  • Never switch mid-challenge on a prop account unless policy and practice say it is safe.
Whatever you pick, rehearse flatten hotkeys until they are boring. Platform debates are secondary if you cannot flatten under stress on the one you already have. Speed without shutdown skill is incomplete.

I treat this as desk maintenance, not inspiration. Full-time work out of Frankfurt rewards written defaults more than clever opinions in the moment.

Sub-second fantasy is less important than reject handling and predictable fills in the European open. Speed bragging without a reject log is theatre. What failed first when you pushed for speed — the UI, rejects, or your own over-clicking under pressure?
