Desk note for scalpers — Wed 9 Sep 2026.

Tape
EUR/USD is grinding the upper half of the week’s range (recent prints around 1.1630–1.1640) while the market waits on two catalysts that actually matter: ECB tomorrow and US CPI Friday. Conviction is low until those land — treat M1 “breakouts” today as noise until spreads and structure agree.

ECB (Thu)
A 25 bp hike to a 2.50% deposit rate is widely treated as priced. The trade is not the 25 bp — it is Lagarde’s guidance on further tightening vs “optionality.” Eurozone inflation back above 3% (energy / conflict narrative) is the justification story. Pre-mark a blackout into the decision and press conference.

Note: Lagarde speaks today in Berlin (Bundesbank context) but is not expected to preview policy before the meeting — do not invent a scalp from the headline alone.

USD / Fed path
September Fed hike odds still hover around the high-50%s after last week’s NFP beat. Friday CPI is the cleaner USD swing factor into next week’s FOMC. Soft dollar pockets (yen strength / “debasement” chatter) can coexist with hike odds — do not force a single narrative on every pair.

Cross-checks
• USDJPY: still policy- and repatriation-sensitive after the yen’s recent push; size for widens.
• XAUUSD: around the $4400 area in recent coverage — hike-odds / real-yield pressure vs softer USD. Event risk into CPI is the story, not today’s chop.
• Oil / geopolitics: elevated energy prices remain part of the inflation narrative — volatility fuel, not an automatic gold long.

My process today
1. Pre-draw Thu ECB + Fri CPI blackout windows now.
2. Prefer A+ levels that already mattered on M15/H1; half size if liquidity feels thin into the event week.
3. No chasing the first impulse after any headline.
