Trade the "second push" instead of the first
The first breakout of a level often gets faded by traders who've been burned by false breaks before. The second push through the same level, minutes or hours later, tends to carry more conviction because it's already survived one round of skepticism.
Worth testing on your own pairs: does your win rate improve waiting for the retest-and-second-push instead of the initial break?

Use yesterday's range as today's default volatility expectation
Before the session starts, note yesterday's full high-to-low range in pips. It's a rough, quick baseline for what "normal" might look like today — useful for sanity-checking whether a move is genuinely extended or still within typical bounds.

Try color-coding your journal by mistake type, not just outcome
Red for size errors, blue for early entries, yellow for held-past-plan. After a month, the dominant color tells you exactly where to focus — often faster than reading every entry line by line.

The "would I take this on a demo" test for oversized positions
Before entering, mentally ask if you'd size the trade the same way on a demo account with nothing at stake. If the honest answer is smaller, your real size is being inflated by something other than the setup itself.

Track your win rate by which hand clicked the mouse
Half-joking, but worth trying once. Some traders find a measurable dip in quality on trades taken one-handed while eating, texting, or otherwise distracted — the click itself becomes a marker for divided attention.

Set a "cool plate" rule
Don't eat while trading. Full stop, dedicated hands, full attention during your session window. Small rule, surprisingly sticky once you notice how many marginal trades happen mid-bite.

Backtest your strategy specifically against the three worst news days of last year
Not average days — the worst ones. If your rules would have kept you out or minimized damage on the worst days, that's a much stronger signal than a strategy that only shines in calm conditions.

The "explain it to a twelve-year-old" filter for setups
If you can't describe why you're entering in plain, simple language a kid could follow, the setup is probably more feeling than criteria. Good setups survive simple explanations.

Keep a separate "almost broke a rule" tally
Not trades taken, just moments you nearly deviated and caught yourself. A rising tally over a stressful week is an early warning sign worth noticing before an actual deviation happens.
