TOOLS, SETUP & ENVIRONMENT

My Multi-Monitor Setup Didn't Make Me a Better Trader. Here's What Actually Did.

I spent real money, early on, on an elaborate multi-monitor setup, genuinely believing more screens watching more charts would translate directly into better trading.

It didn't, honestly. If anything, more visible charts meant more temptation to overtrade, more distraction jumping between pairs I wasn't even planning to trade that day.

What actually improved my trading was reducing what I was looking at, not expanding it — a simpler setup, fewer charts open, fewer distractions competing for attention during an activity that genuinely benefits from focus rather than breadth.

I still have the extra monitors. I just use a lot fewer of them actively during actual trading hours than I originally imagined I would need.

The VPS Question Everyone Asks and My Honest Answer

New scalpers ask about VPS setups a lot, usually assuming it's some kind of essential professional upgrade they're missing out on.

My honest take: it matters more for algorithmic or automated strategies, where consistent uptime and minimal latency genuinely determine execution quality around the clock, than it does for a manual scalper making discretionary decisions during defined hours.

If you're manually watching charts and manually clicking entries during specific windows, a reasonably solid home internet connection and a genuinely stable computer are usually sufficient. The VPS becomes more valuable once you're running something automated that needs to function reliably while you're not actively watching it.

Don't let VPS marketing convince you it's a prerequisite for manual discretionary trading. It solves a specific problem that may or may not actually be your problem.

I Switched Charting Platforms Three Times Looking for a Fix That Was Never About the Platform

At various points, I convinced myself that a different charting platform would meaningfully improve my results — better indicators, cleaner interface, faster execution integration.

Looking back honestly, the platform switches never actually moved the needle on my real results. What moved the needle was consistent execution of a decent strategy, something no charting platform, however well-designed, could substitute for.

I'm not saying platform choice is entirely irrelevant. Reliability and execution speed genuinely matter. But if you're hopping platforms hoping for a performance breakthrough, it's worth honestly asking whether the actual problem lives somewhere else in your process instead.

The Notification Settings That Quietly Improved My Discipline More Than Any Strategy Tweak

I used to have every possible price alert, news alert, and platform notification turned on, believing more information flowing in constantly would help me catch more opportunities.

It mostly just created constant low-grade distraction and a pull to check charts outside my defined trading windows, exactly the kind of behavior I was otherwise trying to discipline myself out of.

Stripping notifications down to only what's genuinely relevant to my actual defined trading windows — nothing outside those hours — quietly removed a source of constant temptation I hadn't fully appreciated as a problem until it was gone.

Sometimes the most useful tool change isn't adding something. It's turning something off.

My Desk Setup Finally Started Helping Once I Stopped Treating Trading Like a Casual Hobby Corner

For a long time, I traded from wherever was convenient — the couch, in bed occasionally, wherever my laptop happened to be sitting that day.

Setting up an actual dedicated space, even a small one, specifically associated with trading and nothing else, changed something subtle but real about how seriously I approached each session mentally.

There's something to the idea of environmental cues shaping behavior. A space specifically associated with focused, disciplined work seems to actually prompt more focused, disciplined behavior once you sit down in it, compared to trading casually from wherever felt convenient in the moment.

It's a small change. It mattered more than I expected it to.

The Single Piece of "Trading Tech" That Actually Made the Biggest Difference Wasn't Trading Tech at All

After trying various indicators, platforms, and setups over the years, the single tool that made the most measurable difference in my actual results was, honestly, just a simple spreadsheet for journaling, set up properly with the right columns from the start.

Not a fancy journaling app, not a paid service with elaborate analytics. Just a well-organized spreadsheet I actually updated consistently, with the specific fields that let me later break down performance by setup, time, and emotional state.

I mention this specifically because it's such an unglamorous answer compared to what people usually expect when they ask about tools. The most valuable tool in my entire setup cost nothing and required no technical sophistication — just consistent, honest use over time.

Hi Fairman,
why do you need VPS for your manual trading?
Ideal VPS is not only one, it depends, where your broker have located servers.

Can you explain why and how it helps to you?

From my point of view is not most important platform like MT4/MT5 or IC trader, but what do you watch on chart and how you will train your brain for that. I mean most important is to find such timeframe, which will work for you.
For example for me is most important combination H4 + M15 and D1 +M15.

What do you think?
Which combination works for you?
