The "Home Run" Trap: Why hitting singles + compounding beats holding for the moon 🚀

Post by PTScalper »

Hey everyone,

I wanted to open up a discussion about one of the biggest psychological traps traders fall into: The Home Run Mentality.

When a lot of us start trading, we think the secret to making big money is finding that one perfect setup, throwing our capital at it, and holding on for dear life until it goes up 300%. We want to catch the absolute bottom and sell the absolute top.

But let's look at the reality of holding out for the "big one":

1.) Tied-Up Capital: Your money is locked in one asset for weeks or months, missing other daily opportunities.

2.) Emotional Burnout: Every minor pullback feels like a disaster. The psychological toll of watching an unrealized gain retrace 40% before bouncing is exhausting.

3.) The "Bagholder" Risk: We get so married to our long-term bias that if the trade turns against us, we refuse to cut losses because "it will come back eventually."

Professional day traders and swing traders don't usually look for 300% runners. They look for 0.5% to 2% daily gains. Why? Because of exponential growth.

When you take small, consistent profits and reinvest them (compounding), the math gets crazy very fast.

Let’s say you start with a $5,000 account.
If you wait all year to hit a single "home run" that gives you a massive 100% return, you end the year with $10,000.

But what if you aim for just a 0.5% gain per day (which is a very achievable "base hit") and compound it over 250 trading days in a year?
You end up with over $17,000.
If you average 1% a day, you end up with over $60,000.

The goal isn't to be a visionary who predicts where an asset will be in a year. The goal is to get in, take your slice of the pie, get out, and compound that new balance tomorrow. Small, boring trades day by day will almost always outpace the emotional rollercoaster of holding out for a lottery ticket.

I’m curious to hear from the group—how long did it take you to shift from the "home run" mindset to focusing on compounding small wins? What helped you make the switch?
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.

If you will think about it little more, it is the same, like in life.
In most cases somebody, who decided to take action and goes every single day even small step forward, in 1-3 years terms will be on another level.

The advantage of forex scalping trading technique on forex spot market is that you are not waiting for one or two big jackpots in month.
But you are doing 20 - 200 smaller steps each day.
