Build In a Maximum Trades Per Day Rule

Post by Fairman »

Add an explicit cap on your number of trades per session directly into your written plan — something in the range of five to ten trades maximum, depending on your specific strategy and how many genuine setups it typically produces in a normal session.

This rule serves a very specific purpose: it forces genuine selectivity by making every trade "count" against a limited budget, rather than allowing an unlimited stream of marginal, low-conviction entries throughout the day.

Think about the psychological difference between these two mindsets. With no cap, every mediocre setup gets a pass — "why not, there's no cost to taking this one too." With a hard cap of, say, seven trades, each potential entry gets evaluated more carefully, because taking a marginal trade now means one fewer "slot" available if a genuinely excellent setup appears later in the session.

Over time, this constraint tends to naturally raise the average quality of trades taken, simply by making scarcity real rather than theoretical. A handful of carefully selected, high-conviction trades will very often outperform a dozen or more low-conviction ones, even before accounting for the additional spread and commission costs the higher-volume approach accumulates. Set your specific number based on your own strategy's typical setup frequency, write it into your plan, and treat hitting that cap the same way you'd treat hitting a daily loss limit — as the plan working correctly, not as an artificial restriction to push against.

You've got a very logical point here, and for a trader still building their "inner compass," a trade cap is a fantastic training tool. It forces you to slow down, evaluate each setup, and weigh the quality of the trade before you ever hit that button. It’s a great way to weed out the impulsive urges that plague many younger traders.

However, I’ve learned over thirty-five years in the pits and behind the screens that a hard, unyielding cap can be a bit of a double-edged sword. There are those "Goldilocks" days—days when the market behaves beautifully, the volume is honest, and the signals are crystal clear across all your indicators. On those days, a strict, non-negotiable cap of, say, ten trades, might mean you’re sitting on your hands and watching a perfectly valid, high-probability move pass you by simply because a number on a piece of paper told you that you’d had enough.

I’d argue that while the discipline of selection is paramount, your cap should be a filter for quality, not a cage for opportunity. You want to eliminate the "junk" trades—the ones where you aren't quite sure—but you don't want to rob yourself of a high-conviction "slam dunk" just because it’s your eleventh trade of the afternoon. You want to be the master of your plan, but you also have to be able to recognize when the market is handing out a feast.

So, I'll leave this for the folks in the trenches: In your experience, is it better to have a rigid rule that keeps you disciplined, or the wisdom to recognize when the market is providing a rare opportunity that deserves to break the rule?

Hi traders, scalpers,

i do not have any rule for maximum trades :-)
Time to time will come holy grail day, when everything i trade i turn into profit and in these days i simply trade as much as possible.

Plus time to time i use strategy, that i risk more from that day profit, because if i would loose that dayli gain, its not big deal and profit for such day can be very very good.

For real, that’s a very tough question to answer but I will go for rigid rule that keeps me disciplined

With time and discipline I can achieve great wealth

That’s really nice to hear, you have a working strategy and you stick with it with a touch of flexibility

I hope you share some of the profits with me someday lol 😂

Hi Fairman,

i think that it is better to share knowledge how i made it so you can learn how to catch that fish for yourself.
To be independent is most important.

Take a care.
