Revenge Trading Is the #1 Account Killer

Post by Fairman »

You know the trade. It's the one you take about thirty seconds after a loss, sized noticeably bigger than usual, without a real setup behind it — just a raw need to get the money back immediately.

That's revenge trading, and if you've been in this game for any length of time, you already know exactly the feeling. It masquerades as taking control back from the market. In reality, it's the single most reliable way to hand the market even more of your account.

The psychology here is worth understanding, not just labeling. A loss triggers a genuine emotional response — frustration, a sense of unfairness, an urge to "fix" the situation immediately. That urge feels like determination in the moment. It is not determination. It's an emotional reaction dressed up as a trading decision, and it bypasses every piece of your actual strategy.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple to describe and genuinely difficult to execute: step away from the platform for at least five minutes after every loss before you even consider the next trade. Get up. Walk around. Let the immediate emotional charge settle before you look at another chart. If, after those five minutes, a genuine setup matching your criteria appears, take it. If what's really happening is that you just want to "get back" at the market, you'll notice the difference once the initial heat has faded — and that noticing is what saves the account.
