Regulation and leverage caps: the same strategy in different jurisdictions

Leverage limits differ across regulators. Some cap retail leverage at 1:30, while offshore entities may offer 1:500 or more. For scalpers, leverage affects position size, margin for multiple trades, and survival during adverse moves.

A strategy designed for high leverage may need to be resized under a cap. With less leverage, fewer simultaneous positions are possible, and the effective return on capital changes.

Regulation also influences execution policies. Brokers in stricter jurisdictions may be required to offer negative balance protection, publish execution statistics, and handle client money under stricter rules. The trade-off can be wider spreads or fewer account options.

Choose the setup based on actual needs. High leverage is not necessarily beneficial for scalpers, since risk is better managed through size than through margin availability.

If the strategy requires leverage beyond the regulated limit, reconsider whether the risk is appropriate. Margin is a tool, and the cost of misusing it is high.

How does the leverage available influence the position sizing in practice?
