Ending the session on purpose

Most traders have rules for starting a session but few for ending one. Sessions end when the trader runs out of time, energy, or money. That is a poor way to finish, because the end of a session is often when mistakes accumulate.

A defined end has several forms: a time limit, a number of trades, a profit target, or a loss limit. Any can work if it is applied consistently.

When the end arrives, close the platform, not just the positions. Spending extra time watching charts after the plan says stop invites impulsive trades.

Use the end of the session for a short review: note the number of trades, the main mistakes, and one thing to improve. Five minutes of reflection while the session is fresh provides better insight than a long review days later.

A clear finish turns trading from an endless activity into a structured one, with boundaries that protect both capital and attention.

How does a trading session end, and is there a ritual that closes it?

My sessions used to end only when I was either tired or annoyed, and I realised the worst trades of my week were all in the last half hour. So I now finish on a fixed condition: either three losing trades in a row, two net winners that reach my daily target, or the clock hitting 11:30 London. Whichever comes first, I stop.

The part you mention about closing the platform has been the most helpful for me. I log out of MT4 entirely and put the laptop in a drawer in the next room for a bit, because if the chart is open I always find a reason to look. The first week felt odd, but the urge faded.

For the review I use a simple three line note: what I took, what I broke, and one small action for tomorrow. I keep these in a text file, and rereading a month of them shows me which mistakes keep returning.
