Pending orders cancelled for insufficient margin at trigger time
A pending order can be placed with plenty of free margin, and then cancelled at trigger time if free margin has shrunk. That is a quirk that costs scalpers breakout trades. The platform checks margin at the moment of activation, not at placement.
Imagine a buy stop sitting above resistance while another position loses a bit of floating equity. Price breaks, the order triggers, margin is insufficient, and the order is cancelled. The breakout runs without a position, even though the account looked healthy an hour earlier.
The more pending orders placed, the worse it gets, because many brokers do not reserve margin for pending orders. Three orders may all trigger at once and together exceed what is available.
Solutions include keeping extra free margin, using fewer simultaneous pending orders, and checking the broker's policy on margin for pending trades. Some platforms do reserve margin, and the behavior differs between account types.
Log the cancellation reasons in the journal, since the platform history shows them.
