Outcome bias: grading the decision by the result
A trade that followed the rules and lost is a good trade. A trade that broke the rules and won is a bad one. Most traders know this and still feel the opposite.
Outcome bias distorts learning. Lucky wins from rule violations reinforce bad habits, while unlucky losses from sound decisions lead to unnecessary changes.
A remedy is scoring each trade on process, separately from result. Create a short checklist: setup valid, spread acceptable, size correct, entry timing right, exit per plan. Give each trade a process score, then compare the two.
Over time, the relationship between process scores and results shows whether the rules have real value. If high-process trades make money on average and low-process trades lose, the system works and discipline is the issue. If high-process trades do not make money, the system needs revision.
Reviewing losers and winners with equal rigor keeps the focus on what can be controlled.
Does the journal grade trades on process, or only on profit and loss?
