Margin calls during spread spikes on a barely leveraged account

A position can get closed by a margin stop-out even when price barely moved. The cause is usually the spread spike. Equity on open positions is often calculated using the closing side of the quote, so a wide spread instantly shrinks floating equity.

That matters for scalpers running tight margin. An account using 90 percent of available margin can drop to a stop-out level in a single bad tick at rollover, when brokers sometimes widen spreads on majors to several pips for a brief window.

Even with comfortable margin, multiple open positions in correlated pairs all lose equity at once when spreads widen across the board.

Simple defenses are available. Keep margin usage lower during known risky windows, such as 5 PM New York. Check the stop-out level specified by the broker, as it varies from 20 to 100 percent. And avoid holding several pairs open through rollover just because each one looks profitable.

Free margin is cheap insurance.

Has anyone been stopped out by a spread spike and found the actual quote data afterward?
