When EURUSD and the dollar index move apart

Usually EURUSD and the dollar index (DXY) move in opposite directions, since the euro is the biggest component of DXY. Sometimes, for a few minutes, they don't: the euro is moving on its own news.

What this can mean:
  • EURUSD rises while DXY is flat or also rising: euro-specific strength, for example from ECB comments or eurozone data.
  • EURUSD falls while DXY falls: euro-specific weakness.
  • Both move in the usual opposite way: a dollar story.
Why it matters for scalping: euro-specific moves can behave differently from dollar moves. A dollar move shows up in all dollar pairs, so GBPUSD and USDJPY confirm it. A euro move shows up in EURGBP and EURJPY instead.

A simple check: keep a small chart of EURGBP next to EURUSD. If EURGBP is moving with EURUSD, it's the euro.

Divergence is short-lived, so it's more useful for understanding a move than for entries.

Do you watch DXY or other pairs for confirmation?
