Holding through the weekend: a cost-benefit view for swing traders

Swing traders face a recurring decision every Friday: hold open positions or close them. Holding exposes the trade to weekend gaps, while closing means paying spread twice and possibly missing a continuation.

A method to decide is to compare results from a past sample in two ways: holding all positions through weekends, and closing on Friday and re-entering on Monday at the same signal. The difference shows whether the gap risk has historically cost or helped.

A worked example of costs: closing and re-entering a position on a pair with a 1.5 pip spread costs 3 pips per weekend. Over 40 weekends, that is 120 pips. Against that, avoiding one large adverse gap could save more.

Triple swap is usually charged on Wednesday, not over the weekend, so swap is not usually a reason to close on Friday.

Some traders hold only positions already in profit beyond the stop, reducing the chance that a gap turns a winner into a loser.
