Prop firm payouts and paperwork: questions to answer early

Many traders get their first prop payout without knowing how to declare it. Not tax advice, just the questions worth answering early, ideally with an adviser in your country.
  • Is the payout treated as trading income, a service fee, or business income where you live? Prop firms often pay traders as contractors, not as account holders.
  • Do you need to register as self-employed or as a business?
  • Can challenge fees be deducted as costs?
  • Which currency is the payout in, and what exchange rate should be used?
  • Does the firm issue any documentation, and from which country?
Practical habits:
  • Save every payout email and invoice.
  • Keep a list of challenge fees with dates.
  • Save the contract or terms of the version you signed.
It's much easier to set this up before the first payout than to fix it at year end.
