Partial closes and the commission that multiplies

Taking profit in stages is popular. Close half at the first target, move the stop to breakeven, let the rest run. It reduces stress and locks in gains.

On accounts with commission per lot, each partial close adds a charge. Closing in three pieces costs more in commission than a single exit, and for a scalper with tight targets, that extra cost matters.

Some brokers charge commission on each side of a lot, meaning opening and closing are both billed. Others charge per ticket. The details change the arithmetic.

A realistic comparison runs the same setup with a single exit and with partial exits, includes all costs, and checks which has the better expectancy. The staged exit often feels better and produces smaller results.

There can be good reasons to scale out, such as reducing variance. They just need to be weighed against the cost, not assumed to be free.

One alternative is using a different structure: a single full exit at a fixed target, with a stop that moves to breakeven at a defined level. It keeps the protective feature of scaling without multiplying the commission.

What does the log show for trades closed in pieces compared with single exits?
