Signs that a large order is being worked

There is no tape in spot forex, but traders keep describing the same fingerprints for a big participant working an order in pieces.

Price grinds in one direction with unusually little retracement, and pullbacks are shallow and short. The grind persists through news that should have changed it.

A level holds repeatedly with surges of activity each time it is tested, as though someone is absorbing everything offered or bid there.

The spread stays unusually tight while price moves steadily, suggesting that liquidity providers are comfortable and well supplied by someone's flow.

Related pairs move in a way that fits a large trade in one currency, such as several dollar pairs shifting together without a trigger.

None of this proves anything. It is a pattern, not evidence. But a trade taken in the direction of a persistent flow tends to have a different feel from one fighting it.

A scenario helps: GBPUSD grinds up 40 pips over two hours with no retracement deeper than 4 pips, while the spread sits at its tightest and tick volume stays even. A trader who fades it on the grounds that it looks stretched meets a patient buyer who has no intention of stopping until the order is done. A trader who joins on the first shallow pullback does far better, until the grind stops, which it usually does without warning.

The skill is not finding the pattern but handling the end of it. A steady grind turning into a sudden stall, with a burst of activity and a pause, is often the exit signal.

It also pays to watch for the opposite case, where a level that should have held gives way with almost no resistance. That often means the big order is finished or has been withdrawn, and the next move can be fast.
