Scalping GBPUSD when gilt yields move sharply

On some mornings UK government bond (gilt) yields move a lot, and sterling often follows. Watching gilts can help explain GBPUSD moves.

What to watch:
  • The 2-year gilt yield, which reacts to Bank of England expectations.
  • The 10-year gilt yield, which can react to fiscal concerns.
  • The spread between gilt and US Treasury yields.
How they relate to sterling:
  • Rising 2-year yields on expectations of higher rates usually support sterling.
  • Rising 10-year yields because of fiscal worries can weaken sterling, as in the autumn of 2022.
That second case is the tricky one: higher yields but a weaker currency. Knowing which story is driving yields matters.

Practical use: on days with big gilt moves, GBPUSD can trend more than usual. Scalpers may prefer to trade with the move rather than fade it.

Sources for yields are easy to find: many charting platforms show gilt and Treasury yields, and the moves are visible in minutes rather than hours.
