Challenge fees as a cost of doing business: a budget approach

Prop challenges cost a fee, and many traders take several attempts before passing. Treating the fees as a budget, rather than a series of separate bets, helps keep decisions rational.

A worked example: a trader sets an annual budget of a fixed amount for challenges, enough for perhaps four attempts. Each failed attempt is reviewed before the next is purchased. When the budget is spent, attempts stop until the next year or until a clear change in approach.

This prevents the common pattern of buying a new challenge immediately after failing one, often in an emotional state.

It also helps to compare the expected value: if the pass rate for your style on demo is low, the budget may be better spent on more practice time. Data from your own demo trading under the challenge rules is the best guide.

Refund policies matter too, since some firms return the fee with the first payout.
