A free dress rehearsal: evaluation limits on demo

Before paying for a challenge, a trader can recreate the rules on a free demo account and see how their strategy fares. This costs nothing but time and gives honest feedback.

A method: set the demo balance to match the challenge size, write down the daily loss limit, the maximum drawdown, the profit target and any time limit. Track each day in a spreadsheet, marking any rule breach as a failure.

Repeating the simulation several times from different start dates shows how often the strategy passes under the rules. If it passes one time in five, the expected number of paid attempts is high.

A worked example of what this can reveal: a strategy with good long-term results may fail challenges often because its drawdowns cluster early, breaching the daily limit before profits arrive.

Some traders use a script to enforce the limits automatically on demo, which removes the temptation to ignore a breach.
