The dollar index as a compass for the pair in front of the screen

The DXY measures the dollar against a basket dominated by the euro, so it's not an independent signal for EURUSD. For other pairs, it provides a broader view of dollar direction.
A trade on USDJPY looks different if the dollar is rising against everything versus only against the yen. A buy signal on AUDUSD, when the index is surging, is fighting the tide. A long on USDCAD while the dollar index is falling is a conflicting bet.
For scalpers, the main use is context and filtering. A quick glance at the index shows whether a pair's move is idiosyncratic or part of a general dollar move. Idiosyncratic moves often fade faster. Broad moves tend to have more follow-through.
There are drawbacks. The index is a derived price, usually from futures, and can lag spot. Its composition is heavily weighted to Europe, so it says little about commodity currencies.
An alternative is to watch a handful of dollar pairs on a small multi-chart layout and see whether they agree.
Which dollar-wide measure gives a more useful sense of direction on short timeframes, the index or a custom basket?
